School recently started again and I still don't have internet in my apartment- once AT&T stops being a butt about things, I'll do a propper update but so far things are looking pretty exciting for junior year
+ we split off to design teams and I'm with Diesel working on their undies/loungewear
+ getting more in depth with fabric treatments
+ screen printing!
+ learning to source and outsource
+ learning more about how being a designer out in the industry works
+ anddd hopefully I'm getting more organized so I'll be able to update

thanks to all of you (hahaha when did I get so many watchers? ah 28 is a lot for me!), and please bear with me for the moment!

Bleeding onto other blogs

Hahaha nothing I can really share right now,

but things are kind of moving crazy fast for me at the moment, I'll share once I have something solid to show you guys<333333 (and when I have time :'D)

The place was called 'Teas the Season' and is located in down town San Mateo- it's not quite as good as Crown and Crumpet in SF, but it's a hell of a lot closer for me! Also you can cut costs if you go with a friend and order one pot of tea and then seperate plates of sandwiches/scones/sweets from eachother~ They also have knitting nights (friday) and monthly book club meetings! I want to go knit there but I've been super busy lately.

Fanime + outfit snaps

Sadly I wasn't able to afford the 'Fancy french event' as we were all calling it, but I did have a blast at fanime! Not posting my cosplay photos, but I was in lolita for half the weekend.

I picked up a brand new Algonquins t-shirt from the swap meet on friday for 20$- according to the tag, the retail was about 60! (Never underestimate swap meets- 80% of the stuff you probably won't be intrested in, but you can find some real gems if you look hard enough!)

The head bow is from Chantilly (35$) , and the flower head band I think is from Paris kids(7$), both were bought at the magical boutique.

of course no photos were allowed, but it was crazy seeing so much brand in one place at once! It was amazing to be able to see tripple fortune head pieces and brands like atlier pierrot and chantilly up close- eventhough I'm more of a goth at heart, I fell half in love with the black colorway of Angelic Pretty's Wonder Cookie skirt *__*

This is what I was wearing on Sunday morning, repping the old school bxw coordinate- the JSK is by Baby and of course the bow is the one I bought at the magical boutique.

I wish I could have gotten more outfit shots but here's what I do have-

I wish I took some more photos before the lolita fashion show! Everyone looked amazing! Hahaha I was kind of out of it and half blind, (thankyou wig and contact lenses...) so I didn't feel like fiddling around with my camera

Mori Girl inspiration post

A little less then a month ago I promised to post more, and...

since then school and various personal things have been kicking my butt- honestly I don't know if I'll be able to contribute much to this blog in the future because the workload is only going to increase- I've only updated my personal lj four times this month so far and I'm usually a friendslist spammer, so that's saying something!

anyway here's an inspiration post by way of appology.

I 've noticed Mori Girl style getting popular this year favored by people looking to rest their eyes from all the sugary sweetness in the lolita community- in the rest of the fashion world, kind of a twee look is starting to become popular as well and there's a decent overlap in style, so it should be easy to find pieces at your local mall or boutique to add to your mori girl wardrobe.

hahaha as for me, although I wouldn't mind the 'Mori Girl life style', I think I'm more of a 'Swamp Girl' myself...

This is the most lucid I've been for awhile so I thought I'd take the chance to update.

I swear I didn't mean to forget to post for almost a month, but words cannot describe how busy I've been- expect a few 'catch up' posts every now and then because shoving it all into one post would be a tad overwhelming.

Okay, so I was at my friend's house chilling before we drove back to LA and she was checking her email and regular websites and... I saw that picture (formerly) at the top of this blog and I went 'Oh lawd- I got that dyejob forever ago!'

Anyway, long story short, I haven't been updating because of personal reasons, also I've been busy like a mofo during break.

SO on to relevant material-

I was on a shopping report at melrose the other day and holy shit-

Vivienne coming to LA?! It's not like I have the money, but I'll be happy to camp outside the store and drool!

It's pretty wierd, I checked the official site and google fu'd it, but there seems to be no relevant info about when it will open up? I'll be swinging over to melrose occasionally, so I'll be sure to keep you guys updated! (currently all the windows are blocked so you can't see in side.... the biulding is pretty big though)

Another hair dye review...

I was going blonde for awhile so I decided to try out a new dye-

Brand: Punky Color

Color: Alpine Green

Eventhough I've been going for a bright green lately, I wanted to try something diffent-

in the container it pretty much looks like dark green acrylic paint with a hint of blue.

Off the bat it was true to the dye in the container- but now about a week later it looks more blue then anything else!

I really like the color (haha but not on my hair) but I've been getting a lot of comments on it - 'Oooh your hair looks like a peacock!' and 'If Jesus dyed his hair, that's what color he would dye it'

.... thanks? XD I guess that's a pretty high compliment?!

anyway, via shitty webcam, here's what it looks like now:

Because of the yellow lighting, it looks more greenish, but it's really kind of a bright turquoise~ (And of course that streak I left bleached has slowly gradated...)

Although it hasn't really faded- it's turning progressively blue. By the way it dyed my bathroom, it should have a decent hold on my hair... @__@ Rinsing my hair with a cup of vinigar the first time after dying it like my friend suggested, helped hold the color in really well last time, so of course I've continued doing it.

In other news I finished a commission for someone~

I was really happy to work with her again~ She was a previous customer who liked the hat I made her and decided to commission me again >3!!!

She emailed me a bunch of photos (Oh I want the veil like this: and it would be nice if you had these feathers: but really just use your judgement) as well as a photo of the dress she wanted to wear it with- SO I pretty much got free reign and it (imho) turned out really nicely <3

WHEW last weekend was a busy one!

It's almost finals time-

good news? Counting down less then two weeks 'till winter break-

bad news? SO. MUCH. WORK.

Undaunted, last weekend I took some time off from patterns and ect. to go to the Induced Epidemic exhibition put on by Haute Macabre.

SADLY my ghettotastic camera is far to delicate to take out of the house anymore (current usage? taking pictures of sketches and outfit shots ):), so I don't have any pictures. Anyway, I like to arrive fairly early to things so I got there at 8 sharp- I heard a lot of people showed, but when I was there, it seemed to just be the event coordinators, artists and those who knew them. This was really cool and all but I was just shuffling around checking out the artwork.

(who? me? Ah, no I don't have any work up... so i see everyone else came in a group? That's nice they all know eachother- ah I'm under age, trust me, I'd take the wine if I was allowed)

It's the 'chaos gallery' is pretty much a small room, but the artwork was really intresting. One piece that caught my eye was a series of felted bunny heads that progressively mutated<3

After scrutinizing the exhibition, I headed next door to the Museum of Death. It's small, but much bigger then it looks from the outside, and it's packed with all sorts of interesting artifacts. If you're intrested in the grotesque and macabre, or simply the sort of person who's immune to /b/ and subscribes to wtf_inc, you'd enjoy it. However, some photos (and a preserved head) are fairly graphic, so if you have a weak stomach I'd either be careful what I looked at, or avoid it.

The price of admission to the museum was 15$ (the exhibit was free) and completely worth it to me- I'd also like to note that the museum staff were super nice and friendly :]

On sunday I ended up going to my model drawing teacher's exhibition. It turned out it wasn't only him, but another Otis graduate displaying. It's kind of odd seeing your teacher out of a school context, but as a working professional as well.

Unrelated- but I hope you guys had a nice loliday! I was busy running around down town LA, so I didn't dress up, but shit happens, you know?

the title doesn't lie- they ARE the best brownies you'll ever eat- and further more, they're super easy to make, and don't include a ton of ingredients you'll never use again :] If you don't have a mixer, I just used a fork to beat the batter and it came out fine.

SO I didn't end up going to the fashion show on Saturday (had a fun filled time with some of my friends who came down to LA for the weekend instead~ I LOVE YOU GUYS<3!!!)

but I did make it to the goth party at royal tea on Friday :]

What I wore:

Honestly I've been putting off the catch up post for a while since there's so much to catch up on D:

Honestly the designs are boring, so I just zoomed in on the fashion figures...

speaking of fashion figures, I just finished this weeks illustration project- we were pretty much given only the constraints of 'it has to have 'shine',

and womens swimsuit back and side pose, so I did two suits inspired by french graffitti artist Fafi~ I think it turned out pretty well

but I'll let you guys know what the teacher thinks :'D

(for reference on my mid term I got a B- / C+ - Yikes!)

Last weekend i didn't attend the tea party, but I did go to PMX-

(dress by meta, blouse + boots from goodwill, crown by me)

so now in school I'm like this-

Back and other unrelatedness

Ugh it's been SO LONG without an update...

Anyway my laptop died a couple weeks ago and I just bought a replacement in the last couple of days- I've been pretty busy with school too though.

Of course I have a bunch of stuff to post, and I was about to do a series of posts that were halloween themed, but the material I had was on the old laptop so... perhaps next year :'D

Also I removed the Doe Deere/Lime Crime blog from the blog roll because it seems like Xenia is deep in some shady business indeed. haha if you didn't feel like reading through the links, basically theres a substantial amount of evidence that Lime Crime is just repackaging ready made eyeshadow and marking it up OVER 9000 DOLLARS :'D

of course I don't know any of this 'first hand' because I'm not too into makeup and haven't ordered any of her products before, but I figured I'd give a warning to people who were thinking about purchasing from her :] It seems like a lot of times there are scammers who are fairly well known in bjd fandom/makeup/ some other community that are able to get away with stuff simply because most lolitas aren't part of those other communities and don't recognize them.

SO asside from that shiz- who else is going out for halloween? I sewed up my costume a couple weeks ago so I should have some pretty decent photos later :]

PRETTY MUCH like 'Things I love Thursdays' except for it being one day late and involving more 4 letter words :]

(haha real reason it's not on thursday? I'm usually pulling an all nighter for fashion illustration on Friday)

- Milanoo is having a sale on some of their lolita clothing- Note- pictures on that site are very obviously stolen, but girls have ordered from there and been happy with the result. Personally, I'd just avoid ordering anything that puts a focus on or contaains a lot of lace!

FUCK YEAH WIGS

SO. I ordered a kick ass wig from Cyperous- for the record, here's my ugly mug without it

Came exactly as pictured, and with two hair nets and a matching wig cap :D

What can I say- I love ittttt! It's longer then my old wig but it's MUCH less tangly and it has a nice luster to it- not dull but not the super reflective fake party store wig quality either~ It's also really easy to style because it's smooth- I could just twist and clip sections without getting my hands caught in knots and I've heard they'll bounce right back after minor teasing (hahaha I must admit I'll need to work up my courage a bit before i try that) also if I was so inclined, these wigs are heat resistant so I could curl it more or straighten it out using hot water.I was a little afraid it would be too small for my head (because the old wig was) but it's fine~ so unless you have an extremily big head you should be fine xDD Also for an extra fee they can actually make the wig a little bigger so if you have really long hair or just a large noggin, they've got you covered!

Verdict? These wigs have a great reputation already in the cosplay community and I can see why! I think they look really realistic (from my wig and from other people's pictures that I've seen) and I think it's absolutely worth the price, but if you buy one I'd suggest you hop on a group order like I did! Shipping is killer Dx

Sock dreams review!

Honestly I've never heard a review of sockdreams.com that wasn't positive. Their communication is good, offers free tracking (although this may be due to the size of my order), shipping is prompt (recieved my items in less then a week even with the free shipping!) and their selection is quite extensive.

anyway first up:

red x white striped socks

What Sockdreams says: Soft and stretchy, these stay up well and look great doing it. More sock-like than nylon-like. Leg Avenue label. One size fits most 90-160 lbs. Women's shoe sizes 6-10. They seem to be more of an over the knee on larger legs. Also worked great as a cuffed knee high on our tester with a 19inch calf.

What I say: A good opaque striped sock- I wanted to get these because it provides a bit more cushioning then tights, also I like the look of socks better in this case. However, on my calves (16 inches at the widest point) the socks are stretching enough to show a bit of the elastic in the fabric. It's not too visible, but I thought I would point it out. Also I'm a shoe size 9 and the 'feet' just fit, it shouldn'treally a big issue though unless you're wearing footwear that would show this. For reference, I'm wearing the left sock cuffed to knee high, and the right one as an OTK eventhough it's difficult to see.

What Sockdreams says: Are you a nurse or a candy striper? Maybe you just want to dress up like one for fun... If so, these are a perfect finishing touch for your outfit! Sold by the pair with cute little matching thermometer barrettes.Medium to large, up to 20 inches. They have two red snaps to adjust width.

What I say: I've said it before, and I'll say it again- it's the thermometer hair clips that won me over :B (pictured clipped onto the left sock garter), yes, if not obvious I have a weakness for cute relatively useless things that I don't need D: The sock garters them selves are as pictured, cute, and the adjustable snaps make it so you can wear it on your thighs or around your calves. Constructionwise, they decorations are just glued on which was a dissapointing, however there's no globs of hot glue visible, so it's all cool. All in all I'd say they weren't the 24$, but they're cute and serve their purpose.

Trouser socks

What Sockdream says: Floral lace pattern from the tops of the feet to just below the cuff. Beautifully hand-screen printed with no overlaps or gaps in the pattern. These look amazing with a skirt and your prettiest shoes. Made in the USA. Tube style socks which will fit most feet and will look best on women's shoe sizes 6-10.5
Maximum top stretch 17.5 inches.

What I say: These are everybit as gorgeous in real life as they look on your screen *3*~ Also I guess I made a good decision to buy them when I did because the blackxgold is sold out! (haha I think I got the last pair~ I'm sure they'll restock eventually though) White x black looks just as lovely and probably more versatile. Again, the max measurements sock dreams gives are a bit generous. I probably wouldn't go over a 9.5 in shoe size, because with my size 9 feet combined with my calves, the socks already fall a bit shorter then I'd like. Also, there is some minor crackling in the screen print near the top that I feel like would be visible if your calves were the max 17.5 inches.

The final say: Sockdreams ships quickly and delivers true to photo. Although some of the prices on the items listed as 'hand made' or 'made specially for sock dreams' are a bit high, if you don't have the knowlege/knowhow to construct certain things or want something unique but don't have the time to make it your self, I'd say go for it. Also, when ordering if the stretching of a print bothers you I'd definately err on the smaller side of max measurements given by them.

Takamasa Ishihara is one fierce bitch

You heard me- second fierce bitch is none other than Takamasa Ishihara- founder of J-glam, ex. Loop, ex. Due le Quartz, formerly under PSC- AKA Miyavi.

Let me just say I have the utmost respect for this guy not only as a musician but as a human- each interview I read from him I only respect him more. I know a lot of people aren't exactly fans of his style or music, but you can't deny he's overcome a lot to get where he is now.

Starting from the beginning- a little background for those who aren't familiar with Miyavi(I'll try not to gush too much). As a half Japanese half Korean ( happas representttttttt) he probably got a lot of shit growing up, but at the age of 17 Miyavi moved to Tokyo with only a guitar and not much else. Eventually he was scouted as a model and after appearing in the gothic & lolita bible for brands like Atlier Boz, Fotus, Alice Auaa, Black Peace Now and H. Naoto, he ran into the band Due le Quartz who were missing a guitarist. After joining, Miyavi took over composing their songs and song writing as well as lead guitar and background vocals (which honestly mostly ammounted to screeching sounds). Eventhough they were indies, Due le Quartz soon became popular, but seemingly at the height of this, they disbanded. In a move that might seem cold hearted to many DLQ fans, Miyavi announced he was going solo and changing his stage name from Miyabi the next day.

From the start people didn't know what to expect from his solo career. Let me be frank- listening to early live tapes, he was clearly capitalizing on his popularity from DLQ- his singing was pretty bad. However when edited nicely on CDs, they sold well with the help of his comosition, guitar skill and charisma. He lost quite a few fans at first- instead of sticking with the more typical indie Visual Kei style that DLQ was categorized as, he made it clear very quickly that he was all about trying new things and experimentation. If you listen to his discography, you can catch hints of hip hop, rap, folk, blues, jazz, rock, metal, pop, and much more! With his signature tattoos and rapidly changing hair styles, he managed to be a chameleon- cyber one day, goth the next then sporting baggy pants and a trucker cap- and some how iconic at the same time- catching the eye of many. With the progression of styles, he finally started playing shows internationally as well- he did a world tour last year, and is doing one this year as well. At each stop he makes the effort to talk to the audience in their native language, and arrives through the front door to wave to his fans.

Most recently, Miyavi's managed to make most of the jrock fandom shit brix announcing his leave from PSC which has managed him for 10 years and start his own company JGlam to be able to expand more over seas and become closer with his fans. Indeed- check out his home page linked to at the end of this post- he has feeds from his myspace, twitter, youtube, and facebook among other things. Also he's recently announced his marrige to the Jpop singer Melody and the birth of their daughter Loveli. (Please note, as much as I love this man, I'm afraid naming things isn't his strong suit. I suppose Loveli is quite a bit better then 'This iz the japanese kabuki kid' or 'Vblong' which were a couple of the predictions.)

Anyway why is he such a fierce bitch? He started out as a model and it shows-his personal style is always interesting and often questionable- whether he's wearing booty shorts and brightly colored leggings, a trucker cap askew on his head, or wildly patterned PJS- he rocks it.

A bit of a minipost right here becauseI have quite a bit of work to get done for tomorrow (Thank heavens for noon classes! I'd die if I had an 8 AM tomorrow!), but I managed to have some *ghasp* extra money this month from doing commissions, and decided to splurge at sock dreams- if you refer to that socks post a couple entries down, I ordered the black x gold trouser socks and a couple things for my halloween costume :D

Of course I'll give pictures and review when it comes!

Also, just a word of warning, for those of you looking to purchase fake hair or dread falls, STAY AWAY FROM JADED DREADS - I ordered from them 7 months ago and they finally sent me my stuff! I gave them my home address this time because honestly I was expecting them to drag on another 7 months. I am happy that they've decided to improve their customer service lately (which honestly isn't saying much seeing as previously it was literally nonexistant), but I'll try to give a nonbaised review when I can go get them on break.

I'm not saying that Jaded Dreads are total scammers (well technically I don't know, maybe there's a pebble in that box or something lololol) but they dissapeared with a chunk of my money for quite a while with no communication whatsoever and didn't respond to the multiple emails/myspace messages which I worded politely. (and one which I wasn't so polite in :B) Finally after a snarky myspace reply to the notice that they were having a sale, I got a response... and then nothing to confirm that they took note to the new address, but my mom called and confirmed they'd gotten the package, so I suppose that's fine.

However I do have friends who have ordered stuff from them before me and still haven't gotten their products, so just make sure to research sellers before you commit! If I'd googled jaded dreads before paying, I could have saved myself a lot of grief and nail biting.

Agh it feels like it's been forever since the last update!

It's because I've been busy with school!

Hahaha and I figured it would be lame if each day I was all 'I learned _____ today in modeldrawing/patterndrafting/studio/fashionillustration/textilescience' but was again too busy to do a write up on something else interesting ...

but tadah~ our first illustration project- kids swim suits!

ah the more I look at it the more I dislike it actually! I'll definately do a better job on our next assignment! (male model heads- yum<3)

(next time I'll just scan in the fashion figure part if I can do so without wrinking the paper...)

Speaking of assignments though- I just got back from doing a shopping report for my illustration class.

We were supposed to hit up some designer stores at Melrose and then sneak photos/notes so we could draw flats of the clothing later and take notes on things like price, fabric, current trends, customer base ect.

It was a little nerve wracking- I'm sure it didn't take that long, but it felt like scribbling down the fabric blends and taking pictures took forever! And I felt super bad when not buying anything, the sales girl at Betsey Johnson was especially nice.

Agh but that skirt was around 200$! I'm not starving (YET) but a purchase like that would K.O. my wallet!

Where did I end up hitting up? Diesel (omg LOVE how their store is decorated!), Marc by Marc Jacobs (I love the neon reversable leather bags ;3;~~~~if it had some sort of closure I'd be all over it!), Paul Smith (I didn't know about this store before and fell in love with SO MANY of their stuff! The jacket I took photos of was around $2500 but it was gorgeous ;3;~), Theory, and Betsey of course!

We also went into Alexander McQueen to drool eventhough it wasn't on the assignment! In real life.... it's breath taking. It almost justifies over 200$ for a screen printed t-shirt! Almost!

On our way back we decided to go to Beverly Center to check out some stores we could actually afford and eat. I ended up buying a pair of black opaque leggings. Yes, I've given in to the trend...

At Forever 21 we spotted the actress Bai Ling trying on crazy sunglasses xD I know she's always getting ragged on for her clothes, but hey, flats, booty shorts, and an Ed Hardy hoodie? More power to you home girl!

Hair dye!

SO.

I'm not sure at all how relevant this is going to be to the rest of you but I recently redyed my hair :D

Over the years I've had literally every color in the rainbow in my hair, and so far I've exparmented with green hairdye using three diffrent kinds-

Brand: Manic Panic

Color: Electric Lizard, amplified formula

Results: Came out streaky yellowish green and not bright at all- I even dyed twice and I still didn't get results I was happy with! Dye faded out into a yucky brown-green within a week. In Manic Panic's defense, my hair was aznblonde (aka that orangy color asians get when they bleach their hair half assed) and it was left over from a previous dyejob that had faded. However, I've had this problem when I had prebleached so I haven't really had a good experience with the brand ):

Brand: Splat

Color: Neon Green

Results: I know it looks like seafoam green but it was more of a super bright blue toned green. I was definately happier then I was with the manic panic dye, but the color was much lighter then I was expecting it. (Splat works decently for all the other colors considering there's no reference photo on the box... just models with badly photoshopped hair!) The color was completely faded in the back to blonde and brown in under three weeks. (umm plus side is it comes with bleach?)

Brand: Special Effects

Color: Iguana Green

Review: I was kind of weary of it because in the past I've always gotten better results from dyes which you have to mix beforehand. Also when I applied it I was expecting the color to be quite streaky because my hair wasn't evenly bleached- when I washed it out suprise suprise! A dark rich true green! So far I haven't seen any fading (well honestly it's been less then a week so I'll keep you guys updated) and I get tones of compliments on my hair :] Even some areas that were dyed dark brown before turned green- also it didn't fry my hair at all! Do I even need to say I'm super happy with it?

note: Another green hair dye I've heard is popular is punky professional's Apple Green- I haven't tried it out yet but maybe in the future... I've heard people like this because the product looks less like dino snot then special effect's product.

I mean we need more of those inspirational kinds of posts instead of melodramatic teal deer bawwing without understanding the facts.

Before you get your bloomers in a knot let me say this, I'll be the first one to admit that back in the day when I was starting out lolita if lolita fucks had been in existance at that time, I probably would have been a regular on there. Not posting there, but being posted on there. In fact eventhough I have never considered myself one of the 'e-famous' or rather 'e-infamous' girls, my pictures have pretty much made the rounds of any relevant fuck/wank comm and even a couple non related ones. Some times it's been justified and other times it was obvious delicious vendetta omnomnom. I've even had anon trolling on my old account on unlocked entries.

ANYWAY what I'm trying to say is young lolitas, if you get posted to a fucks/drama/snark comm, don't dispare. We've all been there. And before you go crying off about it remember it wont make you any more popular and go ahead and re-read the ducks post. I know sometimes it's terribly difficult to distinguish snarking on your outfit from snarking about you personally, but take it nicely, don't run in defending your self, don't run away to a diffrent account, don't flounce dramatically. We may seem like bitches but all we want you to do is maybe adjust that duck on your head a bit because you have it on backwards, and then we can all go to a tea party together, or catch a movie, or play mini golf, or what ever it is frilly girls with ducks on their heads do.

Some girls are shoe girls, some girls are purse girls...

I like socks.

Don't get me wrong, if I see a sufficiently drool-worthy pair of platforms or a fabulous clutch I'll lust over it all the same, but socks are my true obsession.

I have estimated that all of my socks, tights, leggings, and similarly related paraphenilia make up at least a fourth of my wardrobe. Right now, they take up approximately 1.5 drawers of my dresser, and there's more at home.

Gothic White

So the other day I was thinking, why don't you see many white gothic outfits? It would be an intresting change from the all black outfits which turn into a person shaped black hole when photographed in bad lighting.

Sadly though, in this day and age the common misconception that 'goth' is basically just wearing all black all the time. In lolita there's the disturbing rise of the use of the term 'bitter loli'. Ignoring the fact that in japanese it sounds like Nigga Loli (as a kind anon on loli secrets poinded out), I think it's pretty rediculous that just because a dress is mostly black it is no longer in the 'sweet' category. Call Toy Parade or any of the other sacherine sweet prints by Angelic Pretty 'bitter', all you want- I'm still getting a tooth ache over here. Also, if I had a nickle every time I saw someone with a frilly cupcake dress with lace everywhere and bows exploding all over it BUT in a black x white colorway, calling their outfit 'gothic' I would be able to afford those delicious (overpriced) tempura rolles at the food court under the fashion campus.

Anyway, aside from an obvious sweet print (pastel colors, stuffed animals, candy, puppies, bows, ect.) what design features mark a printless dress as gothic rather then sweet? Gothic clothing is more mature, it presents more of a streamlined sillouette. Accessories may include crosses (both normal and inverted), chunky jewelry, choakers, gloves, high platforms, and fishnet are definately more prominant then in 'normal' lolita style. Also on a more mature note, occasionally more 'fetishy' elements are present like corsets.

But in conclusion let me say this is by no way an official guide ; although I enjoy the gothic style I am by no means a goth and am definately not an authority on the style!

Anyway goth (I presume) is usually in black because of the connotations the color has where the style originated- death, darkness, night ect. However, white also shares some of theses- even in the west, ghosts are usually portrayed as being pale ethereal forms, and in Asia, the color white signifies death and mourning.

School- START!

Today was the second day of officially being a fashion major!

Why no update yesterday? After all I was plenty excited!

...

too excited. My room mate and I weren't able to sleep a wink the night before so on monday we were kind of disfunctional D:
I can't tell you how his day went, but we both chugged some coffee before heading out!

My schedule in no particular order is

Model drawing, pattern drafting, textile science, speech, sophomore studio, fashion illustration and contemporary art studies.

So far I've had pattern drafting, textile science, speech and contemporary art studies.

first impressions:

Pattern drafting: Agh it seemed a little fast paced for me- my head was spinning a little towards the end! Maybe it was just a combo of it being my first class, being already intimidated by drafting patterns and coffee failiure... Seriously, towards the end I really started feeling sick D:! I'm sure it will go better next time x___x

Textile science: It seems at first it will be a lecture class and then later will be the more hands on stuff. Although the teacher was fairly engaging, running on less then an hour of sleep and two cups I still fell asleep periodically in the beginning... I find it's best if I just let my self conk out inconspicuously for a short time so I'm able to function for the rest of the class.

Contemporary art survey: We didn't go much into the nature of the class, but it seems interesting. During introductions the fact I wear lolita came up and the teacher asked me to wear a dress to class next week... I hope the weather cools down a little! As much as I love my meta OP I'd rather wear my new JSK with a blouse for a less infantile first impression.

Speech: I'm not going to lie, it seemed like a boring class, but the teacher was totally engaging. Anyway I'm not a good speaker and get really nervous when public speaking so it's a good class for me to take. Also the teacher moved it up so it ends at about 5:30- allthough that means it starts soon after contemporary art survey, I like the change.

Anyway I'm super happy- all my teachers seem really cool<3

Also, I was brain storming saving money ideas and decided to post- they're pretty relevant for any fashionista/impulse buyer :B

- sell old school supplies- I don't know how it works at your college but we have to buy tones of course readers that we won't otherwise use! Better to get money for them even if it's just a fraction of the original price

- carry around water and a snack- It might seem a bit strange if you're go out eating with your friends and you pull out a lunch instead of buying one, but I'm sure they'll understand. Also if you always have something to drink, you won't get super thirsty and end up splurging on some jamba or starbucks! (trust me, you might start out saying 'oh it's not much' but it adds up pretty quickly)

- share books- again supplies are costly- especially at art school! If it's possible, find a friend with classes diffrent days then you so you can use just one set of books. Just make sure they're reliable!

- watch out for bargains- a no brainer- but keep an eye peeled for 10 for 10$ deals at your local super market. I mean 10 lean cuisines/cans of soup/w/e looks like a lot of food at first, but you're going to need it! Also, a note: make sure you buy things you're going to eat- I bought three containers of cottege cheese with pineapple last year on sale only to throw them out... they tasted disgusting! At Ralphs they have huge bags of potatoes for cheap- if you don't mind a starchy diet, they're a good deal.

- keep an eye on your fridge- last year when I moved out I found a fair ammount of food I'd managed to forget about in the pantry which had to be thrown away. If you're on a tight buget and think you have to make a grocery trip, do a thurough investigation of your cabinets, drawers and fridge. Make sure to eat things before they expire!

- buy the basics- rice, noodles (not the instant kind!), chicken broth and tortillas are my personal college basics. (yes, how carb concious of me, I'm glad you noticed) with the addition of one or two simple ingredients they become full meals- also depending what you decide to put in, the cost per meal could be less then 1$

Dream Dress Syndrome

to combat the ranty-ness of that last entry I thought I'd blog about something that made me really happy~
(again I'd like to apologize the swiftness in which I jumped from introduction to a informative post and then straight to uncoherant ranting! In my defense it was about 3 AM when I decided to word-vomit a rebuttal.)

Maybe it is because of the very nature of lolita fashion, the obsession with fantasy and fancy, the adoration of beautiful impractical things, that what I call the 'dream dress' syndrom is so prominant!

Now, this isn't a lolita specific thing, I know bjd owners often have a 'dream doll' they long to purchase, the average fashionista lusts over a pair of shoes she HAS TO HAVE, or with any hobby really, it's natural for people to make shopping lists in their head and have a particular item they quest for. (Ah glorious materialism how I love thee <3)

Anyway, back to the dream dress. This is a fact; whether she (or he) knows it, every lolita has a dream dress. This is the dress that maybe introduced them to the style or even fall in love with it, it's the dress that maybe sums up everything they love about lolita in one garment for them- sometimes it might not even be a dress at all! (insert a JSK from moi meme moitie, a bonnet from tripple fortune, a tail coat from atlier boz or any other item here)

Haha unfortunately for me, what cemented this particular dress as my 'dream dress' recently, was seeing it on egl comm sales for a mere 170$ plus matching headbow and shipping.

Now, I was one of those girls who has a huge folder of dresses, hats, cutsews ect. that we one day hope to purchase (or replicate) eventually, and when ever a post on egl came up asking 'Show me your dream dress girls!' I didn't know how to reply.

But back to realizing it was my dream dress- my heart beat quickened- my palms grew sweaty- I spazzed on aim to whoever happened to be online that OMG this dress was on sale what do I do?! ( I would like to quote a choice couple of sentences from Kamikaze Girls here, but alas my copy is at home. Novala, you might be a slightly creepy japanese dude, but you know the inner workings of a maiden's heart!)

At 170$, even for a Metamorphose OP which originally retailed at over 300$ (and if you add the shipping costs and the matching headbow, the price could very easily tip into the upper 400's) it is the largest lolita purchase I have yet to make- at a time when I know I'll be short of money anyway. (and yes, I am afraid I'll be living off of plain noodles ... with more noodles for quite a while)

After two days of completely irrational anxiety ( refreshing the sales page every 10 min. to see if there had been any offers so far- CHECK) I finally broke down and asked the seller to hold it a couple of days so I could purchase it.

Anyways, yesterday it arrived a couple days ago and I didn't know what to expect. Would I be dissapointed finally holding this dress which I've longed for unknowingly for some time? Would I be completely furfilled and choose not to buy another item of lolita clothing because it couldn't match up to the hype and gorgeousness of this dress?

Can I just say that I am in love?

It's every bit as beautiful in real life as I pictured <3333>

SO my advice is as follows

- if you see your dream dress on sale and you know you're the sort of person who's going to have regrets- get it!

- of course this entails being considerate of your current financial position- last year I wasn't so smart with my bugeting and thus had be pretty thrifty so I wasn't living off of old halloween candy. (OH WAIT...)

- So I suppose the point is, go ahead and indulge yourself but be knowledgable about what you can or cannot do- if you really want something, splurge only if you can deal with the concequences! The saddest thing would be buying your dream dress only to sell it off soon after because you couldn't afford your rent/food/other nessecity.

It might sound like I'm trying to act like your mom, but I know mine would say something like 'Devote your money to important things first!' That is certainly the reasonable approach, but if you love lolita, I feel that a love of a little bit of impracticality comes along for the ride!

And for gods sake if you buy that dress- wear it! Confidence will only make you more beautiful<3

LOLITAS: get over your selves!

IN MY OPINION lolita has grown so much from when I first joined the community in 05. There has been an influx of new people for better and for worse- sweet has replaced gothic as the popular style- cosplayers on /cgl/ are getting annoyed because of the influx of lolitas- more and more brands have started shipping overseas (haha yes, those of you who also remember when metamorphose was the only one who did international shipping, cheers)- yes, I am an old fag, hear me roar.
However I've noticed something else growing alongside the lolita community. A reputation. Not even a real one I might add, but girls warning n00bs, 'Be careful otherwise you might be posted on that community!' 'I really think that's a good idea but I wouldn't say that online!' Bull. Shit.
Most of these accusations are completely baseless and come from others who don't know what they're talking about. People who haven't lurked lolita fucks, gtfo egl or lolita wank (when it was still in commission). They haven't seen these sub comunities band together and actually do good- reporting scammers, calling out girls who are actively threatening others and so forth. I'm not trying to say all of the snark comms are vigilante based, only looking to do good for egl, but I've seen countless people called out on vendetta posts, mocking people for being 'ugly' or 'fat', being tasteless or racist.
However if you would listen to some girls on egl you would think we have a designated day where we pick a random girl from daily lolita and then photoshop swatstikas onto her forehead. It has even gotten to the point where I have seen newspaper articles on lolita- barely after the style definition it mentions how hateful the main community is, how girls are afraid to post without getting attacked!
You've been talking about how bad of a reputation lolita has girls, I hope you're happy now that we've got one. Saying things like 'I had the opportunity to meet some very new lolitas. They were so full of fresh ideas, things never done before. I tried to be encouraging, but I knew that if they were ever to voice these ideas, they would be shot down.' is pretentious. MAking EGL sound like the big bad but she is kind and openminded enough to see their merit. Making stupid assumptions that their ideas will be shot down automaticaly.
It's rediculous that I'm supposed to feel a kinship with all other lolitas- it's the same as any other intrest, lolita is not special. There are people I love who dress lolita, and there are lolitas who I know in real life and greatly dislike. Some of my best friends are not lolitas, and some of my best friends are lolitas. I am fully capable of realizing the exact same emotion in another's eyes having felt it myself and still hold a deep dislike for them. Just because I empathise does not mean I sympathise. Although I'm decrying the claim that we're supposed to get along based on a shared intrest for frilly clothing, EGL, is a wonderful thing.
I've made some of my best friends and countless other cool people through it. I feel like I'm instantly welcomed into a community if I just go and post a meetup saying I'll be in town a couple days and see if anyone wants to get together.
The athmosphere at the baby opening? That girl was being idealistic, there were people snarking as usual, she just wasn't part of the right community so she heard none of it- that being said we're not going to pounce and rip eachother apart based on some silly e-vendetta.
While I'm not saying things posted on the internet have zero merit, real life is a diffrent matter entirely, we all realize how immature it is to start loudly making fun of someone's outfit.
Although we have so many 'how to be lolita' guides, in my experience is we don't give a 'flying fuck' about them as long as the outfit is good. People just need to loosen up and not worry how they're wearing their wristcuffs (LOLOLOL), just take in the overall outfit and keep an ear open to critique.
I'm not going to call the girls who have retreated from egl pussies, they are making the right choice for them selves. As much as I wish everyone would get a bit more of a thicker skin and find the strength to communicate, I know it's not going to happen. These people are at least making the right choice, knowing that they aren't comfortable being in the communities and are likely to get their feelings hurt to withdraw. The stupid ones keep posting on egl pushing their opinions on the unwilling, getting posted to gtfoegl, crying about it, and then making a flounce forgotten in a week.

I am in favour of myself, what I find asthetically pleasing, the people I care about. I am in favour of my creativity and artistic growth. I am in favour of girls taking critisism to heart and not crying about it like little bitches. I am in favour of girls being strong and comfortable in their personalities or striving to change it, whether or not they are 'catty females' or whatever else. I am in favour of being strong enough to be comfortable in a group but not letting it define you, being able to stand proud alone or with your friends.

I am in favour of lolita fashion, and how dare you say I am not.

Connie Chiu is one fierce bitch

I figured a good way to start off was blogging about some of my style inspirations- people that maybe not have a style that inspires mine directly, but have a well... inspiring style nonetheless :B

First up is the model Connie Chiu, a chinese model with albinism. I stumbled upon her photos on the interwebs a while back and well, let me direct you back to the title of this post. Sadly she seems to be a rather enigmatic figure, even her own website gives only a couple paragraphs about herself.

From what I can gather is she was born to Chinese parents in Hongkong 1969 but grew up in Sweden. After going through art school for photography she sent a photo off to Jean Paul Gaultier and was asked to appear in one of his couture runway shows. Since then she has worked with various fashion photographers including Terry Richardson, Paul Burley, Heidi Niemala, and Morten Smidt, and appeared on the runways modeling designs by Margie Tsai, Ann Huybens, Marc Lebihan, Jean Paul Gaultier, Stella Cadante and more. Asside from modeling, she also has an intrest in writing, poetry and journalism. Sadly though if any of these works are available on the internet to the general public at all, my google fu is too weak to find them.

Hello currently non-existing audience, let me give myself an introduction.

I go by Andrea/angryasiangirl/carbonidiot on livejournal, deviantart and a plethora of other blogging/community/art websites. On livejournal I mostly talk about my day to day life and my journal there is mostly friends-locked. Thus I decided to start a fashion blog.

SO who am I? 18 year old fashion student, about to start my sophomore year at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California. An avid lover of Japanese street fashion as well as any other style I come across. Self proclaimed brand whore and thrifter. Book worm and fashion victim.
